The Indian Test team's batting stars had a tough time as they returned to Ranji Trophy cricket. However, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja shone brightly with the ball, taking five wickets in Saurashtra's first innings against Delhi at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Thursday.
Jadeja's superb bowling performance was a huge highlight for the squad, especially given that crucial players like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant were all dismissed for single-digit scores in their respective matches.
After Saurashtra skipper Jayadev Unadkat claimed the first wicket by dismissing Arpit Rana in the first over, Jadeja made his imprint in the tenth over, trapping the batter LBW. Even though Yash Dhull and Delhi captain Ayush Badoni forged a partnership, Jadeja demonstrated his ability by breaking the stand and stopping Dhull from reaching fifty.
Rishabh Pant's introduction drew interest, but his time at the crease was brief, as Jadeja removed him for one run off ten balls. The 36-year-old continued to dominate, dismissing Ayush Badoni for 60, his fourth wicket.
Jadeja sealed off his five-wicket haul by sending Navdeep Saini back for a first-ball duck, thus finishing Delhi's innings.
Meanwhile, after a disappointing performance against Australia and New Zealand in Tests, Rohit Sharma returned to the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai after a decade in search of form. Attempting his signature pull shot against Umar Nazir Mir, Rohit Sharma (3 runs off 19 balls) mistimed the shot and was caught by Jammu & Kashmir skipper Paras Dogra at mid-off. His opening partner for India, Yashasvi Jaiswal (4 runs off 8 balls), also fell cheaply for Mumbai.
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer, who has been in exceptional form domestically and has earned a spot in India's Champions Trophy 2025 squad, began his innings with a six. However, his joy was short-lived as the middle-order batsman was caught at mid-on by pacer Yudhvir Singh after scoring just 11 runs.
